Dr. Tonya Carter is a dynamic nurse practitioner who is passionate about providing care and education to under-served populations. She is a native of Fayetteville, NC. Her collegiate career began at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where she received her BA in Exercise and Sports Science (2000). Strongly influenced by the cardiac rehab nurse, she began her nursing education at Fayetteville Technical Community College in 2006. She returned to UNC-Chapel Hill receiving her Bachelor of Nursing Degree in 2008 and Master of Science-Family Nurse Practitioner Degree in 2015. She obtained her Doctor of Nursing Practice Degree in Fall of 2021 from Duke University.
Dr. Carter’s nursing practice is rooted in the care of critically ill patients specifically those with cardiac disorders. She began her nurse practitioner career at Cape Fear Valley Health in 2015. She quickly transitioned to UNC Health in 2016 working as a member of the Cardiovascular and Thoracic ICU Intensivist Team. While she was working inpatient she identified a huge void in her community: quality heart failure care. In 2019, she transitioned back to Fayetteville to work in the UNC Cardiac Electrophysiology and Advanced Heart Failure Clinic-Fayetteville, which anchors the southern part of the state. This clinic provides quality, efficient care to those with heart failure and arrhythmias. As the only APP in this clinic, she has the privilege of serving both EP and HF patients. She holds an adjunct appointment in the UNC School of Nursing.
