David A. Baran, MD, FACC, FSCAI, is the Section Head – Advanced Heart Failure, Transplant and Mechanical Circulatory Support (MCS).Upon earning his medical degree at the University of South Florida Morsani College of Medicine, Dr. Baran completed an internal medicine residency at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center in New York City. He went on to complete three fellowships including congestive heart failure clinical research and transplant cardiology, mechanical assist device at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center, and in clinical cardiology at Mount Sinai Medical Center. He is board certified in internal medicine, cardiovascular disease and advanced heart failure and transplant medicine.
Prior to joining Cleveland Clinic, Dr. Baran was the System Director, Advanced Heart Failure, Transplant, and Mechanical Circulatory Support at Sentara Heart Hospital in Virginia where he led a team of heart failure and mechanical circulatory support experts. He also served as Director of Heart Failure and Transplant Research at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center for 14 years.
Dr. Baran is involved in clinical research, having a particular interest in transplant immunosuppression and the management of cardiogenic shock including device therapies. He led the team that created the SCAI Shock system of describing the severity of cardiogenic shock, which is used worldwide. He has personally taken care of more than 1,000 heart transplant patients during his career. His research consists of co-authoring more than 120 peer-reviewed articles, publishing 150 abstracts, and conducting more than 125 lectures/presentations. He holds professional memberships in the following: American College of Cardiology; American Heart Association – Clinical Cardiology Council; International Society of Heart Lung Transplantation; American Society of Transplantation; Heart Failure Society of America; and Society for Cardiac Angiography and Intervention.
